The dictionary meaning of perseverance is “persistence with an action or belief” or “steadfastness”. The phrasal verb would be “come what may”. The very phrase has the power of uplifting one’s self.
Perseverance is the key to success. After thousands of efforts to make the electric light bulb, Thomas Edison said, “I have not failed, I have identified 10,000 ways that it does not work.” Helen Keller, Abraham Lincoln, Marie Curie and an endless list of other great achievers found success by sheer perseverance and pluck.
Apple founder Steve Jobs achieved phenomenal success early in life. When he was 20 years old, he founded Apple from his parents’ garage, and within ten years the company had grown into a $2 billion juggernaut. However, when Jobs turned 30, Apple’s Board of Directors fired Jobs from the company he created, and he found himself unemployed.
A New Opportunity
Rather than seeing this as injustice, Jobs pursued new initiatives. In fact, later he stated that being fired was one of the best things that ever happened to him, since it gave him the opportunity to think in a more creative way and to start a new company.
Jobs not only went back to Apple as its CEO; he helped launch their current resurgence in popularity with the creation and success of the iPod and iPhone. He is considered one of the true legends in the corporate circles. We see a similar streak of perseverance in Ekalavya.
Ekalavya approached Drona-charya and prayed acceptance as a student, I am Ekalavya, son of the tribal chief in the forests of Hastinapura.”
