Mother’s Love
There was a mother who was living with her eight-year- old son in a village. Her name was Muthamma and her son’s name was Balan. The boy lost his father when he was two years old. The mother did household chores in a few houses and educated him in a neighbourhood school.
Balan’s mother had only one eye. The other was operated. So, she was ugly-looking. Balan for no reason did not like his mother. He could not see his mother’s ugly face. His friends mocked at him as the son of a one-eyed woman.
Some good friends told Balan that he was wrong in hating his mother. But he was not sensible. The mother never bothered about her son’s attitude. She loved him deeply and worked day and night to buy him best clothes and spent a lot of money for his education.
The boy passed his high school and college courses. He got a very good job in a big city. He never wanted to live in the village. Nor did he take his mother to the city because he was ashamed to tell others that the one eyed woman was his mother.
One day he received a letter from the village school where he studied, inviting him to join the silver jubilee celebrations of the school. He came to the village but did not go the see his mother. He was attending the function. Important people were introduced. The principal introduced Balan to a senior doctor. He was an eye surgeon. He immediately recognised him and asked, “Are you the son of Muthamma?” Balan was shocked. Hesitantly he asked the doctor, “How do you know my mother?”
